Strike Up More Sales with Thunderbolt™ 3

2/17/16

Thunderbolt™ 3 TechnologyCombining the groundbreaking advancements of Intel® Thunderbolt™ and the ubiquity of Universal Serial Bus (USB), the new Thunderbolt™ 3 is an expansion port that many of your customers will expect to see when they shop for new PC devices this year.

Thunderbolt™ 3 enhances the computing experience and presents many benefits to PC users. A few of these are:

  • Faster data transfer rates up to 40 Gbps - double that of Thunderbolt™ 2 and four times that of USB 3.1
  • Compatible with the latest USB-C devices
  • Supports PCI Express Gen 3 for external graphics cards
  • Supports DisplayPort 1.2 to simultaneously drive two 4K displays
  • Delivers up to 100 watts of power and replaces traditional laptop charging ports

Thunderbolt™ 3

Because Thunderbolt™ 3 can do so many things, it has the ability to enhance all aspects of computing, including gaming, work, and content creation.

Watch this short video to hear Intel’s Jason Ziller, Director of Thunderbolt™ Marketing, discuss the updated technology of Thunderbolt™ 3.

Let’s see how Thunderbolt™ 3 enhances the computing experiences for three types of retail customers.

Gamers Have More PC Device Options

Until now gamers have generally preferred desktop PCs over laptops. Since desktop PCs can hold full-sized graphics cards and are easy to upgrade, they have traditionally offered superior gaming performance with premium graphics.

Now the incredibly fast throughput of Thunderbolt™ 3 makes it possible to connect a plug ‘n’ play graphics card to a laptop and enjoy gaming at recommended or higher settings. This means that a gamer can enjoy the performance of a desktop PC and the portability of a laptop.

Video Streamers Enjoy Better Performance

With a seemingly endless array of video content available to watch online, video streamers have to broadcast their content in the highest quality possible to stand out from the crowd. At minimum, a video streaming setup requires at least one video source such as an HD camera, a video encoder, and a high-speed Internet connection.

However, many video streaming scenarios are considerably more complex. For example, a video game streamer might have two high-definition video sources streaming simultaneously, such as a game console and a secondary camera to broadcast live commentary.

With a maximum throughput of 40 Gbps, Thunderbolt™ 3 can handle the most demanding video streaming tasks without dropped frames or other performance issues.

Audio Buffs Get Low Latency Processing

From the recording studio to the nightclub, a computing device is the centerpiece of virtually every professional audio environment. Music recording and performance environments require a wide array of PC hardware, including virtual instruments, mixers, and storage devices.

In a recording studio Thunderbolt™ 3 enables engineers to work on complex multi-track recordings with extremely low latency. These advanced capabilities will strongly appeal to performing musicians as well. Thunderbolt™ 3 carries up to 100 watts of power, making it possible to power equipment such as turntables, microphones, and mixers with the PC device's battery.

More Power with Fewer Cables Fits Every Customer Type

It’s not just the gamers, video streamers, and audio aficionados who will want to invest in Thunderbolt™ 3. It combines entirely new technology with several features that once required many different ports. Thanks to its compatibility with USB-C, it can replace all of the most common ports. This means fewer cables to keep up with or clutter up a space.

Additionally, condensing standard USB, video, power, and networking ports into a single Thunderbolt™ 3 port can dramatically reduce the size of a PC’s motherboard, allowing for extremely thin and light PC devices.

Many of the latest desktops, laptops, and tablets with 6th generation Intel® Core™ processors have Thunderbolt™ 3 built in. As more consumers become aware of the versatility and benefits provided by Thunderbolt™ 3, they will be looking to purchase devices that have it.

Sales reps must be prepared to answer the questions their customers will have and know which devices have this capability. Are your reps ready?
